68th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain this weekend |

Activities are being planned in Moncton this weekend, by Metro Moncton Veterans, to celebrate the 68th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. A parade, beginning at 2 p.m. will begin at the old entrance to the airport will be followed by a reception at the Golden Age Club. |

Military Dive Team Mapping Site of Old Plane Crash |

An American military dive team is spending this month in Botwood mapping the site of a plane crash that occurred in the harbour 66 years ago. The group is known as the Joint Prisoner of War - M I A Accounting Command or JPAC and is based out of Hawaii. They conduct humanitarian missions around the world to recover remains of American personnel involved in military missions. Team leader Captain George Mitroka says in 1942 the Excalibur, one of the famous flying boats which used Botwood as a stopover between the U S and Ireland, crashed on takeoff. The two passengers unaccounted for were American military personnel.

During April and May of 1945 a plan to deliver food into German-occupied Holland became known as Operation Manna. The British Broadcasting Corporation announced the mission to the Dutch citizens on April 24, and five days later hope began to fall from the sky in the form of nourishment.

Grey skies befitting a very somber occasion set the scene at the Heritage Air Park, a place of remembrance, on June 1st. A large crowd of local dignitaries, military personnel, donors of heritage stones and families who had traveled from as far away as the Maritimes was there to attend two unveiling ceremonies. |

The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, along with General Rick Hillier, Chief of the Defence Staff, concluded their visit of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This visit was an important familiarization trip for Minister MacKay during a special 50th anniversary for NORAD.
